Frequently Asked Questions
- Q. What are the yardage increments for my Multi-Range 3-Dot Red Dot Sight
- A. The Horton Multi-Range 3 Dot sight was calibrated to have approximately 10 yard increments between dots. Each bow and arrow combination will vary. Shoot each dot at a known yardage to verify for your particular bow.
- Q. Can I use any style scope on my crossbow?
- A. The industry standard is 150 yards for riflescopes. Crossbow hunting is much closer, so a typical crossbow scope should have a Parallax of approximately 50 yards. Parallax is a term that describes where a scope reticle is focused at a given distance.
- Q. Does my Horton crossbow come equipped with a cable saver?
- A. Only Horton\'s aluminum barreled crossbows, such as Horton Hunter® use a cable saver.
- Q. What is the best arrow to shoot in my Horton crossbow
- A. Horton crossbow arrows are specifically designed for use with Horton crossbows. Please read additional details about Horton's Matched-Weight arrows. This section can be found on the homepage of this website. You should also know that shaft diameter, mass weight, quality of construction, component hardware and fletching specifications are critical to safety and top performance. Other brands of arrows may not be suitable for use in your Horton crossbow. Use of arrows not meeting Horton specifications could cause damage to your crossbow, void the factory warranty and cause injury or death to the shooter and/or bystanders.
- Q. What is the best broadhead to shoot in my Horton Crossbow?
- A. Horton has worked with one of the top broadhead manufactures to design two new broadheads. These new broadheads are design specifically for Horton arrows. Please see the accessory section of the website.
- Q. How often should I use rail lube?
- A. Rail lube should be applied every 20 to 25 shots to ensure longer string life.
- Q. What is the warranty on my Horton product that I just purchased?
- A. For warranty information on all Horton products see the warranty information supplied with your producted at time of purchase.
- Q. Is it legal to hunt with a crossbow in my state?
- A. Check with your state's Division of Wildlife for current regulations.
- Q. What is the best way to quiet my crossbow?
- A. The best way to quiet your crossbow is to reduce vibration on all dynamic components. The new line of SoundStoppers™ from Horton have proven to be very effective. Using Horton's SoundStopper™ Noise Killer kit will greatly quiet any crossbow.
- Q. What is the maximum effective range of a crossbow?
- A. The maximum effective range of a crossbow in a hunting situation is 40 yards.
- Q. How flat does a crossbow shoot?
- A. A crossbow has the same flight characteristics of a modern compound bow. You will need different sight settings for 20, 30, and 40 yards.
- Q. How should I send my bow back for service?
- A. Call using our new toll free Customer Service number which is 800-551-7468 and push "1" to be transfered directly to Horton's Customer Service Department. They will give you a Return Authorization Number so your bow is serviced correctly and returned to you quickly.
- Q. What are the differences between recurve-style crossbows and compound crossbows?
- A. Recurve-style crossbows allow for easier string changes and are inherently wider. Compound crossbows require slightly more effort to service but are more compact in design, deliver more energy per inch of power stroke and are up to 15% more efficient. Cocking is typically easier due to the shorter overall length as well as the built-in \"let off\" in draw weight, making it less critical to cock evenly due to the working characteristics of the wheels.
- Q. What is the difference between "bull-pup" designs and conventional designs?
- A. Horton currently offers both styles. Bull-pup designs shorten overall bow length while maintaining power stroke. The cocking mechanism is typically behind the trigger and connected by a trigger linkage. Conventional designs have the cocking mechanism positioned directly above the trigger with direct contact with the trigger.
- Q. What is the purpose of the Horton Dial-A-Range system?
- A. Some shooters prefer a red-dot or other single-reticle sighting system. The Dial-A-Range allows the shooter to change the aiming point of the single reticle to compensate for different ranges.
- Q. Why are my Mult-A-Range scope crosshairs unevenly spaced?
- A. The Mult-A-Range scope reticles are spaced according to the average trajectory of a 175-pound crossbow. Due to the changing trajectory, the space between 20 and 30 will not be the same as the space between 30 and 40 and so on. The added affect of the 4-power magnification further distorts the spacing to the eye.
- Q. What is the difference between quad limbs and solid limbs?
- A. It is an inherent characteristic for some limbs to split down the middle when stressed. Quad limbs were designed by a few companies to eliminate the "middle" by pre-splitting the limbs. However, limb twist and limb torque is more difficult to control with quad limbs, so accuracy can be affected. In addition, there is less limb surface to evenly absorb the stress, making them inherently weaker. Quality solid limbs made with high-stress materials prevent the common tendency for splitting as well as reduce limb torque. Horton uses thermal-graphic stress testing to ensure that forces are distributed evenly throughout the limb, increasing strength, reducing torque and improving consistent accuracy.
